In November 2016, the couple went on a Mexican Riviera cruise with some family members. During formal night, the Captain's Dinner, guests assembled in the Piazza for a champagne toast and photos; as is tradition. That evening, family members told Ashlee they had won the opportunity to cut in front of the line and take pictures with the Captain. 

After dinner, they waited in the Piazza for the evening's festivities . As the wait time increased, so did Ashlee's impatience and Charles' nervousness. Finally, the Cruise Director greeted everyone and said the evening was special and one of their guests had an announcement to make. Charles was then called to the center of the floor, got down on one knee, and asked Ashlee to marry him.
